Farmers with taste

The true enjoyment begins with honest food, grown with love and without chemicals. Conscious consumers of the twenty-first century therefore choose products from organic and biodynamic agriculture out of conviction. There is plenty to choose from these days, thanks to skilled farmers who do not burden the earth and do not unnecessarily cause animals to suffer. Or, to put it more positively, who base their production methods on personal commitment and quality, rather than on more and bigger.

Thanks to the pioneers

Boeren met Smaak (Farmers with Taste) was written out of respect for the pioneers in organic farming. For the dowsers and for the controversial scientists. For the farmers and market gardeners from Terschelling to Zeeland, who dared to leave the trodden chemical paths. For the consumers who embraced their lovingly grown products. For the trade that followed.

The first factory-based biodynamic dairy production began on Terschelling. The ‘Soune Groun’ project gave impetus to the market of organic pioneers in the Northern Netherlands. Dynamics in potato, vegetable, and fruit cultivation arose when organic growers from all over the country moved to the new lands in the Flevopolder.
The second revised edition of Boeren met Smaak has been expanded with new stories about resistance and victory, from processors and polder farmers. They maintain contact with the consumer, who is welcome to look around the farm.
The work of our organic and biodynamic farmers is placed in the broad perspective of a global movement.

About the authors

Editor-in-chief Jacob de Hoop (Hiaure, 1965) is an editor at Uitgeverij PENN.nl and a part-time farmer. He conducted research, wrote most of the texts, and coordinated the editorial work.
Ytsen Kooistra (Leeuwarden, 1940) is a former biology teacher and publicist. He was one of the driving forces behind Soune Groun and was closely involved in the Terschelling project. He supervised the editorial team and provided most of the nature and landscape photos.
